Here I take just a few moment to focus on me, letting you learn a bit about me or, for you parents, the person teaching your child and student English this year.
I am a Roanoke native. I went to Crystal Spring Elementary, James Madison MS, and Patrick Henry HS. Following, I went to Hampden-Sydney College for my BA degree in English, and, two years later, Virginia Tech for my Master of Arts in English.
I have not always been a teacher, but I have always taught. After college, I worked in outdoor education/recreation teaching young people to be strong leaders and informed, thoughtful, self-reliant, but yet still responsible and accountable, participants, both outside of doors and inside. Looking to explore business for a while (which became, somehow, a decade and a bit more), I became a mortgage banker with a small part of the Bank of Fincastle, Colonial Mortgage, just up the road, and educated customers about the in's and out's of paying for and financing a home.
Finally, I became a classroom teacher obviously, first in both AP English and English in high school and then here at RMMS in 6th grade, teaching English, "Journey" English, and "collaborative" English! Two years ago, I switched to teaching 7th grade Advanced English and English 7. As with anything else, I, sort of, had to relearn how to ride a bike in my new role as a 7th grade teacher. Now, I hope, the bike is nicely tuned and ready to ride some challenging new trails with confidence and strength.
Ms. Woodard and I both teach here at Read Mountain; she teaches Civics in eighth grade just down the hall! We live in southwest Roanoke County (Hidden Valley area) with our two boys, Camden, 12, and Nolan, 8, and a beautiful and ridiculously spoiled Husky mix named, Luna.
We are an active family who you might run into mountain biking, hiking, running, playing soccer or lacrosse (the boys), somewhere or anywhere in the area. My own interests involve my family life, camping, cycling (primarily mountain biking), and music (I am an old --??--former drummer), film, and, of course, reading!!
I try to think that each day is poised for adventure...let's get to it!
